New Fiat engine cuts fuel consumption

fiatA new engine system unveiled today by Fiat could cut auto fuel consumption by up to 25 percent as well as reduce carbon emissions, according to a report from the Detroit Free Press.

To be highlighted at the Geneva Auto Show this week, the Multiair system provides variable valve timing through a combination of hydraulics and electronic controls, the automaker says. Fiat originally developed the technology for its Formula 1 Ferrari.

The first car to feature the Multiair system, the Alfa Romeo MiTo, is expected to be available by the end of this year.
